An intern has put a sign on my door that says “Ira Sachs, Director.” It’s my fourth feature, but it still feels lucky and unexpected to be here again. It’s never something I take for granted, and, though the pieces are coming together—I met a costume designer I like this morning—there’s still these dangling questions about financing that sit heavy in the corner of my mind. One of our already committed financiers is now having unexpected problems convincing his sister (the lawyer in the family) that investing $120,000 in independent film is a good idea. I can’t have much influence there, unfortunately, nor can I actively disagree with the sister, on the monetary basis. But I also think money is good for lots of things, and making films is one of them.
